FOCUS SCRIPTURE:  "We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us.  God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him."
(I John 4: 16 NASB)

In our first focus for the week, Pastor mentioned a scripture verse that he memorized in Sunday School.  Ironically, today I want to bring to your attention one of the first songs that I am sure many of us learned in church as children - Jesus Loves Me.  The lyrics are "Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so; little ones to Him belong; they are weak but He is strong.  Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes Jesus loves me for the bible tells me so".   Even though that little song may have been introduced to us as children sometimes we still sing it as adults.  But it should mean a world of difference now than it did when we were young.  As children we had no experience with Jesus, we really did not know Him as a Savior, as a provider, as a keeper, as a way maker!  It was just a simple little song, with easy words to remember, and a soothing melody.

Pastor and I met as teenagers and had a brief courtship of six months before we walked down the aisle to be united in holy matrimony.   To complicate the brief courtship we lived in different states, with a 7-hour driving distance between us.  We declared our love for each other and pledged to spend the rest of our lives together.  But our love could not have had much depth because of lack of time together and we really did not know much about each other.  It was going to take time for our love to grow.

As that simple childhood song says, Jesus loves us because the Bible tells us so.  But as our relationship grows with the Lord and we experience more and more of Him, then we come to love Him deeper.   While we read about Him in the Bible, we experience Him daily as He demonstrates His never-ending love.  To know Him is to love Him.  Surface relationships have no depth, they are shallow and superficial.  Reading about Him, and hearing others talk about Him is one thing, but to have your own relationship with Him is what He longs for and what we should be striving for.  The more we learn about the Lord and continue to be recipients of His unchanging love, we will not only feel His love, but we will believe His love and only desire to abide in Him and Him in us.

ACTIVITY:  Write down as many things or occurrences in your life that have demonstrated the depth of the love of Jesus to you.

PRAYER:  Dear Jesus, thank you for always demonstrating your true love for me.  I have not always recognized it and because of that I have not appreciated your love as I should.  Lord I want to know you better through your word and a deeper relationship with you.  I realize I can never match your love, but I am asking you this week to teach me, show me, take me beneath the surface.  I want to love like you love.   In Jesus' Name, AMEN.
